YumReads in Saudi dates markets .. Sunnah and good for health

Saudi Arabia is well-known for the production and export of dates due to its religious status and benefits for the body. The popularity of dates increases during the Holy Month of Ramadan as it enters baking and making drinks. “YumReads” had a tour of Riyadh’s most famous dates markets. Awad Al-Adini said, a dates trader in the Maitiq Awad Al-Adini Establishment, said that there are several types of dates that vary in color and size. “The most popular is the fleshy dates which are distinguished by their large size and absence of peel”. Al-Adini added that not only do the sizes and colors of dates differ but also prices vary from one brand to another as “Maknoz El Yadawy” is sold for 90 SAR for each Kilogram while wet dates are sold 60 SAR per kilogram. “Narsian dates” are the most expensive with 120 SAR price for a kilogram. Al-Adini illustrated that dates are beneficial to human bodies and rich in vitamins and minerals, as they contain a relatively high amount of iron and calcium, which prevents anemia, helps reduce harmful cholesterol levels and solves bone problems. “I eat seven dates in the morning to relieve stress and boost digestion”. Omar Saleh, an owner of Maram Saleh Dates store, said that “Ajwa dates” are widely recognized in Saudi Arabia as it is considered Sunnah from the prophet and beneficial for the human body as it enters cancer treatment and strengthens the immune system. Thus, the price for one kilogram is 70 SAR. Regarding the wet Sagai dates, Muhammad Al-Otaibi, seller in Dinary for dates, said that it has a distinctive shape and red color with a yellow top, and is unique in that it does not contain any percentage of white sugar and contains only natural fruit sugar and grape sugar. Its price in the Saudi market is 120 SAR per kilogram. Al-Otaibi added frost dates are used in healthy diets because they contain no white sugar inside, are low in saturated fat, and free of cholesterol, and also contain a high percentage of dietary fiber. Abdullah Hamdan, a trader at the Saleh Dates Center, said that the most expensive and best-selling dates in Saudi Arabia are the Medjool dates whose prices range from 150 SAR to 170 SAR. Hamdan added that what many date lovers may overlook is that overeating dates may lead to severe health problems; Above normal dates’ eating may lead to increased acidity in the stomach and diarrhea. It may also raise the level of sugar in the blood severely, and excessive intake may lead to weight gain.
